The West Indies tour of 1976 is remembered for the historic success of the Indian team. India's record performance in the third Test of the four-Test series is astonishing even today. Actually, India had created history by scoring 406/4 in the Port of Spain Test chasing a target of 403 runs. On 12 April 1976, India's record of successfully chasing the biggest goal in the fourth innings was recorded, which remained intact for 27 years.
Winning chasing the biggest goal in the fourth innings
1. West Indies v Australia, 418/7 run, target 418, St Johns 2003
2. South Africa v Australia, 414/4 runs, target 414, Perth 2008
3. India vs West Indies, 406/4 runs, target 403, Port of Spain, 1976
but remembering what happened after that, I still feel scared. Caribbean fast bowlers ignited such fire in the fourth and final Test of the series that Indian players were not able to survive on the pitch. 'Absent Heart' was written in front of five players on the score board of India's second innings. In fact, the series was on par with 1-1, and an unprecedented bounce at Kingston saw the Windies fast bowlers target the Indian team tremendously.
