 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (May 22) announced an advance interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for the cyclone affected in West Bengal.  In a video message after reviewing the situation in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Prime Minister paid Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed during the devastation by cyclone Amfan and the injured.  Announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs. 50,000.

 So far at least 77 people have been reported killed in the state due to the extremely severe cyclone.

 Large-scale damage to infrastructure, public and private property was reported from North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts.

 PM Modi said, "Under the leadership of CM Mamta Banerjee, West Bengal is in a dire crisis due to cyclone Amfan. I announce advance interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for the state. Damage to agriculture, electricity and other sectors  Apart from this a detailed survey will be done for the loss of homes. In this time of crisis and despair, all over the country and the country. The center is with the people of Bengal. "

 Earlier today, ahead of PM Modi's aerial survey in Bengal, Mamta said that the disaster, which has left at least 80 dead, is more than a natural disaster.  He said that with Cyclone Amfan devastating at least 7-8 districts in Bengal and adversely affecting 60 percent of the state's population, it would take time to restore normalcy.
