The collapse of a section of an under-construction bridge in West Bengal's Malda district triggered a fierce clash between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP on Monday, killing three and injuring seven.

A senior police officer said that the dead included a junior engineer and two laborers, whose bodies have been recovered.

He said that five of the seven injured are undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital and two others have been referred to a hospital in Kolkata in "critical" condition.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and former Minister of State in Malda district Krishnendu Narayan Chaudhary called for an inquiry to find out whether "cut money had any role or whether the local representative of the project's centrally-appointed implementing agency, along with local goons  Were you colluded or not? "

'Cut money' refers to bribes or commissions sought by local musclemen or politicians for a project.

The reason behind the collapse needs to be ascertained, whether there was a flaw in the plan, structural design or whether it was due to negligence, Dilip Ghosh said.

BJP MP from Malda North seat Khagen Murmu said that the BJP-led central government had told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that "neither will indulge in corruption nor allow it".

Murmu urged the Center to initiate a high-level inquiry into the incident and take action against those found responsible, irrespective of their political affiliation.

A girder of the second Farakka bridge under construction crashed around 8 pm on Sunday night, leaving many trapped.

Disaster management department personnel are still removing debris.
