All states were called to prepare Census 2021 and NPR headed by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, but West Bengal has refused to attend this meeting.
Objective of National Population Register (NPR) (National Population Register Aims)
The National Population Register aims to create a comprehensive identity database of common residents of India. This comprehensive identity database will also contain biometric information along with demographics. At the same time West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee is opening a front against CAA and NRC. He has also stopped work being done on the National Population Register in Bengal. The Left Government of Kerala has also ordered a halt to all NRP operations in the state.
What is NPR
The National Population Register (NRP) is a document of all ordinary residents residing in India. Documents under the provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 are prepared at the local, sub-district, district, state and national levels. It has been told that if a person has been living in a local area for six months or more, then he is required to register himself with NPR. It was started by the government in 2010 to submit a database of the identity of citizens of India. It has been released by the government in 2016.
