The number of people killed in floods due to heavy rains in West Kenya increased to 34.  Earlier this number was being stated as 17.  12 people are feared to be hit by landslides.  Local administrator of West Pokot province, Joel Bulal, said on Saturday that landslides in Nyarkulian village killed 12 people and four others were missing in Parua village.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said five other people were killed when a car blew into the road between Ketale and Lodwar due to flooding in two rivers.  More than 1 million people have been affected in East Africa due to floods after more than normal rainfall.

The International Rescue Committee said this month that a severe drought has affected many people.  It is now expected to rain for four to six weeks in parts of Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya.  In the last one and a half months in Kenya, the death toll in flood-related incidents has so far risen to 55.
