Moitrish Majumdar, Kolkata:
It was the day of March 12, 1993. Maya was running a daily life in Bombay (now Mumbai). But after 1 p.m. the city running was the first one to run. After a series of 12 consecutive blasts, the city was horrified. There were serial blasts in the city. In those blasts, 257 people were killed, while 1400 people were wounded in some way or the other. Now you might be thinking that why are we referring to the Bombay blast today? Indeed, like the Malegaon, there was a carriage angle in the Mumbai blast also.
Bombs were planted in several places to destroy Bombay city in 2 hours and 10 minutes. The vehicle used to plant a bomb was registered in the name of a woman. Although it was reported that the woman did not use that car.
In fact, after the serial blasts, the 150 members of the police were deployed to catch the accused. Led by DCP Rakesh Maria. When the police was trying to link all the links connected with the blasts, during the investigation, the police had one more scooter in hand. Hand grenades and other weapons were present in those vehicles.
Apparently the van and scooter police had a great way to reach the accused. So during the investigation, the police came to know that the van was registered in the name of a woman. The woman's name was Rubina Memon. His fault also was that he was also a relative of Tiger Memon, the conspirator of the Mumbai blasts. He was arrested.
The police also accused him in the charge sheet of the serial blast case. TADA trial went on in court and 13 years after the blasts, in 2006, Mumbai's TADA court sentenced Rubina to life imprisonment along with three other accused. However, her husband Sulaiman was acquitted in this case. Then Rubina and her lawyer told the court that the van was in her name but she did not use it. He had a relative of him.
Subsequently, in December 2016, the Bombay High Court rejected the petition seeking release of Rubina Memon on the furlo. Because he had been convicted in the TADA court for his involvement in terror activities. Since then, Rubina is locked in Pune's Yerawada jail. The main accused in that case have been convicted. Some accused are still absconding. On June 16, 2017, the TADA court ruled on 7 convicts in this case.
In the Malegaon blast case, the investigating agencies against the accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh received many important evidence. The most important proof of them was the motorcycle used in the blast, which was registered under the name of Pragya Singh. Apart from this, the conversation between the Sadhvi Pragya and the suspect assailant was received by some agencies on the phone. It was revealed that a meeting was organized in Bhopal to construct the plot of the blast. In which Sadhvi was also present.
In fact, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) described him as one of the chief conspirators of the Malegaon blast. September 29, 2008 7 people were killed while 101 people were injured during the blast in Malegaon. Pragya Singh was arrested in October 2008. At present, she is facing charges such as murder, murder attempt, criminal conspiracy, and promoting hostility among different groups on the basis of religion including the Illegal Activity Act (Prevention).
After the Malegaon blast, the court found that the accused Pragya had planned this conspiracy to spread terror and create communal rift in society. To blast the bomb was fitted with a Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Golden LML Freedom Motorcycle. He was registered under the name of motorcycle Pragya Singh Thakur. On the same basis, ATS had arrested Sadhvi on the same basis. The ATS said that Sadhvi had provided motorcycle to his close aide Ramji Kalasangra for the blast. He is also a desirous accused in this matter.
In 2011, the matter was investigated from ATS to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). But in 2016 when NIA filed its first final charge in the Chargesheet Court, it gave a clean chit to Sadhvi Pragya. The NIA said that the ATS, which mentioned the motorcycle in the record, was found to have registered under the name of Sadhvi, but used to use Ramchandra Kalasangra, close to Pragya. NIA had argued that for two years the motorcycle was running Kalasangara, so Sadhvi was not connected to this incident. Therefore there was no case against Sadhvi. On this basis, Pragya Singh got bail after 9 years..
