The unseasonal rains on Thursday and Friday have increased the retail price of vegetables in the city markets at a time when the prices of winter vegetables have started coming down from now.  Sources said, prices are likely to rise further as the crop cycle goes waste.

Traders attributed the price rise to the inability of farmers to harvest vegetables.  Since Thursday night, large expanses of cropland have been submerged.  In addition, supplies, too, have been affected as loading and unloading workers did not turn up due to rain.  The twin problems of delayed harvesting and transportation issues have led to a supply shortage, an increase in prices.

Winter vegetables like cauliflower, cauliflower, shim and brinjal are generally cheaper at this time of the year.  But this week, the prices of many such vegetables have increased by Rs 5 per 10 rupees.  Traders expect vegetable prices to decline in the coming days.
