The US may change sanctions rules to allow Iraq to continue importing natural gas and electricity from Iran.
The Wall Street Journal quoted this to American and Iraqi officials on Thursday. In October 2019, the US allowed Iraq to import natural gas and electricity from Iran for 120 days, which is due to end next week. The situation has changed since Mohammad Tawfiq Alawi was appointed the new Prime Minister of Iraq.
Significantly, in May 2018, US President Donald Trump announced the separation of the US from the Iran nuclear deal. The relationship between the two countries has been severed ever since Iran's top military general Qasim Suleimani was killed in a drone strike. The US and Iraq are working to improve relations.
There is also a doubt about the implementation of the provisions of this nuclear deal. The US has also imposed various types of sanctions on Iran. It is noteworthy that in the year 2015, Iran signed an agreement with America, China, Russia, Germany, France and Britain. Under the agreement, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of economic sanctions imposed on it.
