An under-construction bridge in Malda, West Bengal, collapsed on Sunday (16 February) killing at least two people and injuring five others.
Seven people were evacuated in the first phase of rescue operations, two of whom succumbed, while others are undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital. The dead have been identified as workers who were working on the project.
A team of disaster management and police officers are at the scene. Disaster management groups and police are trying to rescue people from under the debris, but rescue operations are affected on the spot as it gets dark.
According to the police, seven to eight people are still feared trapped under the rubble. The stranded people are engineers, senior officers and workers who were working on the site.
According to early reports, a part of the bridge which is still under construction collapsed after a girder was bent. The construction of the bridge was a project started by NHAI.
