Indian Railways has claimed that it has lost property worth Rs 84 crore in the violence that took place during protests against the CAA and NRC from December 13 to December 15 in West Bengal. The Railways said this in a report filed in the Kolkata High Court.
In an affidavit on Friday before a division bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice A Banerjee, the ex-railway said it suffered a loss of Rs 72.2 crore due to the protests. The affidavit stated that the maximum loss of Rs 46 crore was done in Sealdah division. In addition, the Malda division has incurred a loss of Rs 24.5 crore. The Howrah division also suffered a loss of over one crore.
The court was hearing a PIL which said that those who have suffered a loss in performance, including the railways, should be compensated. Similarly, Southern Railway has given a separate affidavit. South Eastern Railway said in a separate affidavit that it had incurred a loss of Rs 12.75 crore. The next hearing of the case will take place after four weeks.
