About 50 years before today, only 14 turtles of the species named Chelonoidis hoodensis survived. Among them were 2 male and 12 female turtles. Standing on the verge of extinction, these turtles of the species Chelonoidis hudensis lived in a large place on Galapogas Island in the Pacific Ocean, causing their population to grow. In such a situation, a captive breeding program was started in 1965 to save the turtles of this species.
Diego is a 100-year-old male tortoise who established relationships with individual female turtles and helped to give birth to 800 babies. Diego only contributes 40 per cent of this increase in the species of Chelonoidis Hudensis. Due to this feature of Diego, a British newspaper has also named it sex machine. It is being told that Diego will retire in March this year, after which it will be taken back to its home on Galapogas Island once again.
