Congress President Sonia Gandhi called the amended Citizenship Act (CAA) as divisive and said that its purpose is to divide Indians on religious grounds.  At the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in the national capital, she also said that crores of Congress workers will stand shoulder to shoulder in the struggle for equality, justice and respect.

Sonia Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government over protests and the state of the economy against the CAA and said that a high-level commission should be set up for incidents of attacks on youth and students at JNU and elsewhere.

Sonia said, "The new year has started with conflicts, totalitarianism, economic problems, crime".  Describing the CAA as a discriminatory and divisive law, he claimed that it aims to divide the people of India on religious grounds.  Sonia said that a Commission of Privileges should be constituted to investigate the incidents of attacks on youth and students at JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and some other places.  He also expressed concern about the developments in the Gulf region.

Four proposals have also been passed in the meeting of the Congress Working Committee.  The proposal says that the government and PM Modi have broken the confidence of the youth.  He used cruelty to suppress the voices of students and youth.  It also states that a conspiracy was hatched to attack independent and creative thinking institutions.  The Congress Working Committee appealed to lift restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir and restore civil liberties.
