The Center has approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking permission to return 67 acres of land, which was acquired near the controversial Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya, to its original owners. In a new petition, the Center said that it had acquired 67 acres of land near the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site of 2.77 acres of disputed land.
The petition said that Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas (Trust promoting Ram Temple building) had demanded that the additional land acquired in 1991 be given back to the original owners. The apex court had earlier ordered the retention of the 67 acres occupied land near the disputed site.
The Central Government had acquired 67 acres of land near the disputed site in 1991. In the top court, 14 petitions have been filed against Allahabad High Court's 2010 order. The court ordered that 2.77 acres of land be divided equally between three parties Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and Ramlala.
The court had asked the land to be kept by the Central Government.
