Kohima: The Union Home Ministry has declared entire Nagaland as a 'disturbed area'. The Central Government has taken this decision by using powers obtained under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA). According to the order, Nagaland has been declared a disturbed area for six months from December 30, 2018.
Nagaland, which is adjacent to the border of Myanmar, has been declared as a disturbed area several times before due to internal rebellion and terrorist activities. Significantly, AFSPA empowers the security forces to operate the operations anywhere and arrest anybody without any prior notice.
Nagaland will remain disturbed for six months from Dec 30, 2018
A Home Ministry notification states that the central government is of the opinion that the entire Nagaland state area is in such a turbulent and dangerous situation that the use of armed forces is necessary to assist the administration.
The notification states, "In such a case, using the powers conferred under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Privilege) Act, 1958 (No. 28 of 1958), the Central Government hereby announces that the entire Nagaland state is for the purpose of the law There will be a disturbed area for a period of six months from December 30, 2018."
